About Me

Hey there! I’m Erika Batiz, a 20 year old living in Somerville, Massachusetts. I currently attend Tufts University.

I originally started blogging as a student at United World College (UWC) Mostar, an International Baccalaureate school with students from around the world located in Mostar, Bosnia and Herzegovina.

My passions include photography, traveling, trying new things and meeting new people. I love the combination of peanut butter and chocolate, I’ve become fond of the Bosnian tradition of ‘going for coffee’ as a means of social time rather than fueling a habit, and I think each person can make a difference, even if it’s as ‘small’ as a hug and a listening ear for a person who needs it.

I’m a proud alumna of some incredible programs. I’ll list them below, and if you’re interested or have any questions, feel free to contact me! I’d strongly recommend any and all of them to high school students. They’ve been literally life-changing, inspirational, and I’ve made lasting friendships with people around the US and the world.

  • Minnesota Youth in Government (YIG) – 2009-2012
  • Hugh O’Brian Youth Leadership (HOBY) state conference and World Leadership Congress (WLC) – 2011
  • United States Senate Youth Program (USSYP) – 2012
  • United World College Mostar (UWC Mostar) – 2012-2014

If you have any questions or comments, please don’t hesitate to contact me! Just comment on a post and I’ll get back to you.

    Hi Erica,

Our son is going to be a firstie at UWCiM this fall. We are looking for some specific information about dates and school things. He leaves in a month and we would like to know the specific dates for the school year so that we can make travel arrangements and what not, specifically Holiday break dates and last day of the school year.

Thank you very much and have a great day,

Sorry it took me a bit to get back to you! I’ve only seen the preliminary version of the calendar, but it’s unlikely that there will be significant changes to it before the year starts.
Winter Break will be Dec. 14th to Jan. 12th. Students typically leave and return a couple days before or after those dates; the school understands that plane ticket prices are a factor. The last day of the school year is May 27th. You can usually stay in the residences for up to a week after that. I would recommend to leave on the 29th or later, because prom is the night of the 27th, so leaving the following day is tough.

    Hope this helps!

    Hi Erika,

I am shocked by how much you’ve done already in your lifetime! It sounds like you have had some incredible experiences and learned so much from your time abroad, and your recent “Cozy Evening” photo is picturesque! I would love to hear more about your experiences. If you have time please email me! elsa.thomasma@goabroad.com

    Safe Travels!
