Prepping for the first years

With Introduction Week starting in just under three weeks, I’m beginning to catch the Mostar fever!

With UWC being a two year program, the dynamic between the two generations (equivalent to grades in the US) is definitely different than the dynamic in a four year high school in Minnesota. At UWC, in one summer you go from freshman to senior. There’s no transition time, time for traditions to solidify, time to “earn your place.” This has its pros and cons of course… While it’s fun to prepare for the first years, it’s also funny to think that just a few months before, we were still the “babies” of the school.

Regardless, all of us new second years are getting really excited to welcome the new first years to Mostar! We’ve been trying to give them a lot of information to answer any questions they might have before they come.

There’s this incredible video, which Sofia (from Brazil) made. It gives a solid overview of life at UWC Mostar, all from the perspective of second years.

Sjur (from Norway) made a cool booklet called the UWC Mostar ABC, which is a glossary of all important people, places, and things. You can view that here.

Rhea (my co-year from California) and I made a booklet for our firsties called “The American’s Guide to Mostar.” It just gives an overview of life in Mostar, but tailored to Americans… especially important in sections like what food to bring, what American things to bring, etc.

So that’s what we’ve been working on this summer! In addition to other things which will be waiting for the first years when they arrive, and the whole plan for Introduction Week as well. Here’s to hoping for a great year :)
